Our Goal:
Haynsworth’s K-5 Program seeks to help students develop pride and confidence in themselves and their abilities. Our program focuses on developing a strong academic foundation, critical thinking, personal responsibility and time management skills. We encourage social and emotional growth in a nurturing environment with a supportive and loving teaching staff. We maintain a 15:1 student/teacher ratio.
The Haynsworth Experience:
The K-5 program at Haynsworth provides an enriching curriculum to build skills in language arts, mathematics, social studies, foreign language, technology and art. Our nurturing and supportive environment promotes responsibility, decision-making, problem-solving skills, strong work habits and cooperative social behavior.
Benchmarks for Readiness:
- Recognizes and writes first and last name
- Recognizes and writes upper and lower case letters
- Retells a story in proper sequence
- Uses complete sentence and follows 3+step oral directions
- Recognizes 0-20 and counts to 50
- Recognizes and names colors and shapes
- Displays emotionally appropriate behavior
- Entrance assessment: for developmental age and placement
Language Art and Pre-Reading Development:
The K-5 curriculum meets the individual needs of the students, providing a solid Foundation in phonics, comprehension, language development and a base sight-word vocabulary.
Math:
Math is best learned through the combination of hands-on experience and visual application. Our program is based on developing the following concepts: patterning, sorting, classifying, counting, money, time, addition, subtraction and geometric reasoning.
Social Studies and Science:
The two “S’s” are integrated in our unit studies throughout the curriculum. Mini units are studied throughout the year on the following topics: space, dinosaurs, weather, seasons, rocks, seeds, Pilgrims, basic food groups, dental health and much more.
Foreign Language:
Our students continue to learn the Spanish language through familiar songs, stories and physical activities in the classroom under the direction of a trained Spanish teacher.
Enrichment:
Haynsworth builds upon the basic foundation of learning with hands-on programs in Art and Music. Children are engaged in fun and stimulating art and music classroom activities to provide them with basic skills and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of the arts.
Testing:
National Standard Achievement Tests are administered in the spring.
Conferences:
Parent/teacher conferences are held at the end of the first nine weeks, second nine weeks and in the spring. A parent is required to attend these conferences. Unscheduled conferences may be held upon request of the teacher or parents throughout the year.
Hours:
K-5 hours are from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. A Late Stay Program is available for before and after school.
