A TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE FOR OVER 85 YEARS.
Haynsworth Private School was established in downtown Greenville in 1921 by Mrs. Madeline Haynsworth. Mrs. Haynsworth went to Europe in 1919 to observe schools and came back inspired to open a private school in Greenville that would provide “hands-on” teaching and make education both a rewarding and an exciting experience.
Mrs. Haynsworth operated the school until her retirement in the late 1960s. Her choice for her replacement was Hazel Jay, a beloved first-grade teacher at the school. Soon joining Mrs. Jay in her day-to-day administration was her husband, Jerome, who had served as Assistant Principal at Parker High School.
Thus, began the Jay family’s 55-plus year legacy of educating thousands of young students throughout the Greenville area. Hazel and Jerome Jay’s children all were graduates of the school. Three even taught at the school.
Today, it is Jerome Jay, Jr. who operates the school on behalf of his family, along with his wife, Gina. Gina Jay also attended Haynsworth and in true family tradition, both of their sons did as well.
A love for encouraging young minds to grow…a dedication to providing children a solid foundation for higher learning…all in a nurturing, family environment…this is the Haynsworth Tradition of Academic Excellence.
“We give children a love for learning in a small nurturing environment.”
– Gina Jay
